20 words in Sanskrit for yogis

Today we propose yourself to learn some words in Sanskrit, some of these words that we sing in bhakti yoga or in the yoga classes.  And although we often imagine its meaning from the context we do not always know it exactly. ¿By knowing its meaning will we see its beauty better?

Sanskrit for yogis 🙂

  1. Ayurveda, the science of life, traditional Indian medicine.
  2. Bandha, band – To close or tighten some muscles
  3. Bhagavad Gita, the Song of the Lord. The oldest book on yoga included in the Mahabharata containing the teachings of karma yoga, bhakti yoga and samkhya yoga given by Krisha to Prince Arjuna on the battlefield, more than 3,500 years ago.
  4. Bhakti yoga
  5. Bindu, its meaning is point or seed. We know it as the point, also named tilak, on the forehead as indicative of the third eye.
  6. Dharma is often used in the sense of rules, laws, virtues.
  7. Japa, the chanting of mantras
  8. Karma or Karman, action. Activity including rituals. Commonly it is used to identify the consequences of our acts, our destination.
  9. Mandala, circle.
  10. Mantra = after our mind – repeat some words or syllables
  11. Mudra, seal. A hand gesture or a whole body gesture.
  12. Nadi, channel. One of the 72,000 sutil channels through which travels the subtle energy in our body.
  13. Namaste = In Sanskrit the word is namah + te = namaste means “I bow to you,” my greetings.
  14. Patanjali, writer who compiled the Yoga Sutras and lived 150 BC
  15. Prana – Breathe, energy
  16. Pranayama = praw-nah-yah-mah – controls breathing
  17. Puja, worship. Ritual of worship.
  18. Sadhana, to get spiritual discipline that consists of a series of rituals including chanting of mantras, prayer and the postures or asanas.
  19. Samadhi, union, we are all one. Meditative state in which we are all one.
